  • What we love

The 2016 Valdez Chardonnay is a perfect wine any way you look at it. Caramelized pineapple, marzipan, lemon-honey tart, candle wax, and layers of complex Chardonnay fruit are all present in this full-bodied wine buttressed by considerable natural acids. It develops even more complexity with time in the glass and is a brilliant effort from this producer.

About this Wine

This is your chance to drink a $90+ Chardonnay for less than half the price.

The label’s namesake, Ulises Valdez, is the farmer who’s earned his role as manager of over 1,000 acres of vineyards belonging to illustrious wine makers such as Mark Aubert, Paul Hobbs, and Jayson Pahlmeyer. It takes a special talent to tend to those vines, and Valdez has a remarkable story about how he became one of the most sought-after vineyard managers. For the winemaking part, it is Ulises' friend and client, Mark Aubert, who made this Chardonnay.

Here’s what Robert Parker, Jr. has to say:

"Mark Aubert is one of the contenders for California’s finest practitioner of Burgundian-styled, yet classic, California Chardonnays. His offerings are all made like grand cru Burgundies with full malolactic, the use of French oak and lees stirring, but the purity of fruit, the textural dimensions, and the stunning singularity of these Chardonnays can only be matched by a handful of other Chardonnay producers in the world. He’s that good."

Same craftsman, same grape, same quality as Aubert, except it’s under a different label and it’s less than half the price. Enjoy!

100% Chardonnay; fermented with wild native yeast and barrel aged Sur Lees for 15 months in French oak (20% new) before being bottled un-fined and unfiltered. 200 cases made.

Drink now through 2030.

Ulises will say his biggest winemaking achievement came in 2010, when his Silver Eagle Chardonnay was served at the White House for President Obama’s state dinner honoring the former President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón.

“Just the idea to have one of the bottles of Valdez – this guy who jumped the border in ’85 – on the same table where my hero ate so many times – President Ronald Reagan, who made me legal – that was huge.”

Beautiful wines, made by a remarkable gentleman with an inspiring story. You don’t find wines like Valdez at your corner store.

"I have a passion to make the best wine, to have the best vineyards, to grow the best grapes." Ulises' clients all agree that his work ethic and positive attitude are what set him apart. "I don't pay for my dreams, so I might as well keep dreaming."

So far, Ulises’ dreams are coming true. With more than 30 harvests behind him, Ulises has risen to the top of his profession. Widely considered to be one of the most knowledgeable and skilled vineyard managers in wine country, Ulises has worked with some of the most important winemakers in California including Paul Hobbs, Mark Aubert, Kent Rosenblum, and Jeff Cohn.

Ulises Valdez, the Mexican immigrant who worked his way from the bottom to the very top. Who overcame immense hardship following the loss of his father at age eight and who was not afraid to fail before he succeeded.

I couldn’t be more proud to share Ulises’ wines with you.

Without my team, I’m nothing.

Today, Ulises has more than 50 winery clients and manages 1,000 acres of vineyards.

“I'm the owner, but my guys are the company.”
