2016 Old Vine Zinfandel
What we love
Winemaker Nathan Kandler crafted a spice driven style of Zinfandel from vines planted more than 100 years ago. Somehow the grapes eke out an existence despite being farmed without irrigation. Aromas of cherry blossoms and Bing cherry/pomegranate-like perfume tinged with an intriguingly faint herby spice, like sprigs of peppermint and nettle. Then on palate, the wine goes to something exotic – boysenberry jam, bright red berries, a little bit of dried apricot, all supported by juicy acidity and tannin.
About this Wine
Not all vineyards are created equal and Nathan has a keen eye for finding the magical combination of variety, climate and soil. He believes the first step in any winemaking endeavor is to seek out these unique sites, often found outside of the more famous regions of California.
This Zinfandel was sourced from ancient vines planted in the town of Victor, along the banks of the Mokelumne River. Cooling delta winds and silica-rich soils yield aromatic and pure Zinfandel that is red-fruited and bright. The east-side of the Lodi has long been known for spice driven Zinfandel that belies its stereotype.
To translate the ‘voice of the soil’ into your glass, native yeasts, whole cluster fermentations, minimal sulfur and the judicious use of well-seasoned French Oak are some of the techniques used. Only 100 cases made!
