2017 “Alturas” Syrah
Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino County, CA
What we love
The 2017 “Alturas” Syrah is another gorgeous wine from Halcón. This is a big wine, mostly because of its exuberance, but its flavors of cracked pepper, dark chocolate, and plum are still evident. Smoke, game, tobacco, licorice, mint, and juniper berries all add nuance to this deeply layered Syrah. The 2017 captures all the cool climate savoriness of its vineyard site in a style that holds tremendous appeal.
About this Wine
Sitting at an altitude of 2,500 feet, Halcón’s vineyards is one of the highest vineyards in California. The site features an incredibly cool, windy terroir that produces a concentrated, mineral, and blue fruit driven Syrah.
As is traditional for Syrah in the Cote-Rotie region of France, this Syrah undergoes a co-fermentation with 3% Viognier. 50% of the grapes are fermented whole cluster, preserving the natural earthy characteristics of the wine. This is one exceptionally vivid Syrah. Enjoy!
