What we love
Fruit for Halcón’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape inspired red blend comes from one of the highest vineyards in California, located in the cool climate Yorkville Highlands AVA, and makes for a unique expression and a truly wonderful wine. Peppery and meaty in aroma, this full-bodied wine also shows a good amount of fruit flavor at its core, but it's the black-pepper, beef jus and dark-olive notes that distinguish it.
About this Wine
Located in the Mendocino appellation of Yorkville Highlands, Halcón Vineyard is an extraordinary site. At 2,500 feet elevation, one of the highest in California, cold coastal breezes make vines suffer but extend the growing season to produce fruit with flavor complexity. The vineyard sits on a geologic band known as Yorkville Complex, a rare soil type based on fractured shale, mica-schist and quartz-rich rock. This ancient rock erodes into a thin layer of extremely low vigor soil; the very same soils that garner fame to Côte-Rôtie. Densely planted vines increases competition for water and nutrients, driving root structures deeper and providing riper fruit at lower sugar levels.
In a sentence, this wine is terrific and overdelivers. Cheers!
