  • What we love

The moment your nose dips into the glass, you know you’re dealing with something mighty special. The wine unfurls with a luxurious concoction of spiced golden apples, Meyer lemon, vanilla bean, creamy hazelnut, and a delicate touch of honeycomb. There’s plenty of freshness but no sharp edges, and it could easily be mistaken for something serious from the Côte de Beaune. Savoring a glass of extremely classy Chardonnay is one of the great wine experiences imaginable, but rarely is it this affordable! So, stock up and enjoy your stash over the next 3-5 years!

About this Wine

'The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from Escolle Vineyard located at the northern end of Santa Lucia Highlands. This site is impeccably farmed by the Caracole family, who are incredible stewards of their land. Very low water usage translates into low yields of intense fruit full of flavor.

The enduring image of California Chardonnay as overwrought and buttery doesn’t match the reality on the ground: This exceptionally well-priced bottle makes good on its ‘cool-climate’ promise in electrifying fashion. Just 500 cases made.

  • Technical Data
  • Blend: 100% Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 13.4% | pH: 3.31 | Residual Sugar: 0.4 g/L
  • Winemaking: Joyce’s winemaker, Russell Joyce, notes that the 2017 Chardonnay derives some of its considerable energy and freshness from a decision to harvest just before a major heat spike hit the region. Their Escolle Vineyard Chardonnay was harvested at about 22 degrees brix (resulting in a modest 13.4% alcohol) and fermented in neutral French oak barrels, where it eventually underwent a “partial” malolactic fermentation. It spent a total of about 8 months aging on its lees in barrel before being bottled with minimum sulfur addition and a light filtration.

Russell Joyce

Owner + Winemaker

As a kid, Russell Joyce would come home after baseball practice and help pick grapes in his father’s yard with his cleats still on. Now, his dad’s hobby (“Drink wine and stomp up the grapes,” as Joyce puts it) has grown into a family business, and Joyce, 33, is coming into his own as a winemaker – and proving to be a very innovative and talented one at that.

The boutique winery hand-crafts artisan wines from both their small estate vineyard in Carmel Valley as well as from several other special vineyard sites throughout Monterey County, partnering with local farmers who respect the land and the coastal terroir.

Joyce Wine Co.'s entire portfolio of wines are some of the best in Monterey. This winery is a label to watch and should you find yourself in Carmel Valley, be sure to stop by their lovely tasting room.
