About this Wine

The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from Escolle Vineyard located at the northern end of Santa Lucia Highlands. This site is impeccably farmed by the Caracole family, who are incredible stewards of their land. Very low water usage translates into low yields of intense fruit full of flavor. 

Beautifully balanced and complete, this electrifying Chardonnay from Joyce Wine Co. is one in a long line of truly memorable releases from the Monterey growing region. Just 500 cases made.

If serving with food, pair this Chardonnay with some fresh, briny oysters, sushi, or, in the spirit of its place, a classic Monterey Bay-style cioppino. You are going to remember this wine and you’re going to want more once you’ve tried it, so plan accordingly. Cheers!

  • Winemaking: Joyce’s winemaker, Russell Joyce, notes that the 2017 Chardonnay derives some of its considerable energy and freshness from a decision to harvest just before a major heat spike hit the region. Their Escolle Vineyard Chardonnay was harvested at about 22 degrees brix (resulting in a modest 13.4% alcohol) and fermented in neutral French oak barrels, where it eventually underwent a “partial” malolactic fermentation. It spent a total of about 8 months aging on its lees in barrel before being bottled with minimum sulfur addition and a light filtration.

As a kid, Russell Joyce would come home after baseball practice and help pick grapes in his father’s yard with his cleats still on. Now, his dad’s hobby (“Drink wine and stomp up the grapes,” as Joyce puts it) has grown into a family business, and Joyce, 33, is coming into his own as a winemaker – and proving to be a very innovative and talented one at that.

The boutique winery hand-crafts artisan wines from both their small estate vineyard in Carmel Valley as well as from several other special vineyard sites throughout Monterey County, partnering with local farmers who respect the land and the coastal terroir.
