  • What we love

Winemaker Russell Joyce’s beautiful new releases continue to impress and his latest Syrah effort from Tondré Grapefield in the Santa Lucia Highlands is one of the most deliciously interesting wines you’ll have all year. This is an utterly unique Syrah that is more savory than fruity, and is simply a BLAST to drink and geek out on as it opens up and evolves. Wow!

About this Wine

This Syrah is crazy interesting and crazy delicious, all for just $28 bucks! It’s complex, super smooth, so well-made and offers enthusiasts something uniquely different. Umami savoriness, black olives, rustic earthy tones, and an inviting sweet aroma, like that of freshly ground coffee. This is a brilliant red wine made by the young and talented winemaker Russell Joyce.

When you try as many wines as I do, it’s always a pleasure to land on something truly unique, and even better when it’s for a good price. The combination of joyful drinking and sneaky seriousness is not to be missed! Just 400 cases made.

You’ll want some food with this wine. Pick any meat and grill it your favorite way. Top your flank steak with chimichurri, choose parmesan for your burger, or match its umami tones with mushrooms, miso soup, or stir fry. Mmm, mmm, mmm good!

Drink now through 2022.

  • Technical Data
  • Blend: 100% Syrah
  • Alcohol: 13.5% | pH: 3.63 | Residual Sugar: 0.4 g/L
  • Winemaking: The fruit was hand-harvested in the cool morning hours several days before a heat spike to avoid over-ripe flavors. The grapes were partially destemmed while 40% of the fruit remained as whole clusters. Fermented with 40% whole clusters using native yeasts, then aged on the lees for 8 months in neutral French oak. The wine was ranked to tank and was allowed to settle for one month prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Minimal amounts of sulfur were used.
  • Vineyard: The fruit for this Syrah comes from Tondré Grapefield, located at the center of Santa Lucia Highlands. This site is impeccably farmed by Joe Alarid, a veteran grape and produce farmer in the Salinas Valley. Only 4 acres of this vineyard site are planted to Syrah, which Joyce has been sourcing since 2013. Because this Syrah grows in a relatively cool climate, it is able to produce intense fruit full of bright blue fruit flavors that are nice and fresh tasting, rather than bold and robust.

Russell Joyce

Owner + Winemaker

As a kid, Russell Joyce would come home after baseball practice and help pick grapes in his father’s yard with his cleats still on. Now, his dad’s hobby (“Drink wine and stomp up the grapes,” as Joyce puts it) has grown into a family business, and Joyce, 33, is coming into his own as a winemaker – and proving to be a very innovative and talented one at that.

The boutique winery hand-crafts artisan wines from both their small estate vineyard in Carmel Valley as well as from several other special vineyard sites throughout Monterey County, partnering with local farmers who respect the land and the coastal terroir.

Joyce Wine Co.'s entire portfolio of wines are some of the best in Monterey. This winery is a label to watch and should you find yourself in Carmel Valley, be sure to stop by their lovely tasting room.
