  • What we love

The 2017 Casa Vineyard Syrah is crafted from 15-year-old vines at 2,200 feet elevation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Fermented entirely whole-clustered, this Syrah not the weighty, opaque sort of Syrah you might be accustomed to, but it is gorgeous: This is a limpid, ruby-purple wine expressing fresh black fruits, pine needle, salami, green olive and lavender, with long, tugging tannins.

About this Wine

Medium-bodied and dry, this is a very elegant Syrah expression from mountain top vines that are dry-farmed on very volcanic rocky soils. Expressive, smooth, and flavorful. We recommend decanting to allow the wine to open up. Cheers!

Owners + Winemakers

Established in 2012, Scar of the Sea is a 50-50 partnership founded by longtime friends and colleagues, Mikey Giugni and Michael Brughelli.

Giugni oversees production of their popular hard ciders, their Pet Nat and their county-designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Brughelli oversees their single-vineyard offerings, made inside a small, modest winery space located a few hundred yards as the crow flies from Au Bon Climat Winery. There Brughelli keeps careful watch over about 24 barrels of their single-vineyard Pinot Noir and 12 barrels of their single-vineyard Chardonnay, including their critically-acclaimed Bien Nacido Block 11 Chardonnay.
