Baker Lane Vineyard, Sonoma Coast, CA
What we love
Many of the greatest Syrah in the world now cost well over $100 a bottle. This one from the small Sonoma winery Scribe joins them in every way – except price. Flavors are incredible: Wild blueberry, black olive, cracked pepper, orange peel, exotic spices, and something deliciously umami. But perhaps the most compelling aspect of this Syrah is its freshness. Maybe, it’s the wine’s surprisingly low alcohol that kept its vitality in place. Or maybe the Baker Lane Vineyard is a superlative terroir. It’s hard to know. But I do know one thing: this is one of a handful of the best Syrah in California.
About this Wine
Founded in 2007 by Andrew and Adam Mariani, Scribe Winery produces energetic and terroir-driven wines in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. Bottles are site-specific and produced with a non-interventionist mentality in the cellar.
Baker Lane Vineyard is tucked into the rolling hills southwest of Sebastopol where this cool, maritime-influenced area provides a vibrant and focused expression of California Syrah. The slow ripening means more flavor, more freshness, more energy, and less alcohol. A wide array of clonal choices, dense planting, organic farming, and an overall artisanal approach results in a Syrah of great distinction. Enjoy!
