2019 Cabernet Pfeffer
Enz Vineyard, Lime Kiln Valley, San Benito County, CA
Blue Ox Wine Co.
What we love
Blue Ox Wine Co. highlights curious varietals from unfamiliar places, and there is no varietal more offbeat than Cabernet Pfeffer. Less than 10 acres of this grape are planted in all of California but this Cabernet Sauvignon relative proves that it deserves to be better known. Pfeffer (German for “pepper”) is highly aromatic, with notes of dark red fruit, pepper spice, and forest floor. Though the spicy underpinnings are apparent, it’s the delicacy and restraint that make this wine eminently drinkable. With subtle structure from 70+ year-old vines, this is a wine you’re not going to be able to find anywhere else.
About this Wine
This Cabernet Pfeffer is sourced from the little-known Lime Kiln Valley AVA in San Benito County from an organic, dry-farmed vineyard of beautiful old vines. Enz Vineyard is home to some of the oldest vines in California, dating back to 1887 when they were planted by original homesteaders and were discovered by the Enz family in 1967.
A true rarity, this Cabernet Pfeffer is a medium-bodied wine that has much to offer wine drinkers with an adventurous palate. Enjoy!
