Valenti Ranch, Mendocino Ridge, CA
Drew Family Wines
What we love
Valenti Ranch, an east-facing ridge six miles from the Pacific, consistently grows some of California’s best Syrahs. A wine of real character and pedigree, the 2016 Valenti Ranch Syrah from Jason Drew bristles with nuance and energy. A classic cool-climate Syrah, with distinctive cracked pepper notes, blue and black fruits, game, black tea and licorice give the 2016 a striking aromatic upper register to match its focused, mid-weight personality. This is an especially chiseled style, and it all works so well.
About this Wine
Six miles from the ocean on a mid-elevation windswept east facing ridge at 1,300 -1400 feet, the Valenti Ranch produces a distinctive cool climate Syrah. The constant maritime winds coupled with thin marginal soils of oceanic sedimentary origins, lends itself to naturally lower yields. This translates into greater intensity at lower sugar levels and proper acid structure. Winemaker and owner Jason Drew has worked with this vineyard for 13 years now and continues to farm it according to the organic standard.
