2018 Italian Red Blend
Mendocino County, CA
What we love
In Italy, the house red is often light, fresh, and firmly structured so as to pair beautifully next to a wide range of foods, and that is the inspiration for this blend. Created by Sam Bilbro, a fourth generation California winemaker, “The Bird” red blend is a light, bright and aromatic expression of three Italian grapes, Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo. It offers tons of wild strawberry and dark cherry, uplifted by floral, fruity aromas and tenacious acidity. It changes in the glass to show complexity and verve, with a splash of tannin on the finish. This lively ‘house’ red is superb with a slight chill.
About this Wine
The fruit mostly comes from Fox Hill Vineyard, which is located southeast of Ukiah on Mendocino’s Talmage Bench with well drained soils with high concentrations of gravel and sandstone. Additional fruit comes from Wild Ruth Ranch in Yorkville Highlands, where the high elevation and schist veined sandstone offer more tension and vibrancy. These grapes are from sections of the vineyard that yield a softer structure.
