What we love
This is old-vine Zinfandel at its finest. Notes of ripe strawberry, raspberry, plum, sarsaparilla root, white pepper, and sage. The palate is full-bodied with soft, luxurious tannins and incredibly decadent fruit concentration, though do not think this an alcoholic fruit bomb: there is balance to the intensity of fruit flavors, rich, ripe tannins and integrated, refreshing acidity. The finish is complex, invigorating and explosive all at the same time. Nothing is out of place in this wine: it is a pristine Zinfandel that reflects the historic vineyard where it is from.
About this Wine
The Scar of the Sea Zinfandel is sourced from the historic Lopez Vineyard in the Cucamonga Valley AVA, just 70 miles west of Los Angeles. The vineyard, certified organic and dry-farmed, was first planted in 1918, and today is surrounded by freeways and track homes.
The old Zinfandel bush-vines sprout from the vineyard's granite rocks and sandy soils, producing rich, flavorful fruit. It was fermented with 50% whole-clusters, followed by aging for 8 months in old French oak barrels, then bottling without fining or filtration.

Established in 2012, Scar of the Sea is a 50-50 partnership founded by longtime friends and colleagues, Mikey Giugni and Michael Brughelli.
Giugni oversees production of their popular hard ciders, their Pet Nat and their county-designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Brughelli oversees their single-vineyard offerings, made inside a small, modest winery space located a few hundred yards as the crow flies from Au Bon Climat Winery. There Brughelli keeps careful watch over about 24 barrels of their single-vineyard Pinot Noir and 12 barrels of their single-vineyard Chardonnay, including their critically-acclaimed Bien Nacido Block 11 Chardonnay.
